We were tasked with designing a table that would be a partner to a chair assigned to us. I was to design a table that matched a Shaker style chair. The chair led me to thinking about a writer's cabin and places we go to quietly reflect and explore ideas as well as structures that provide respite. The table top is raised so that when a person is sitting at the end they are at eye level with the plane and can either participate in the happenings of the room or lower their head into the semi-private realm below. The length of the table allows for an activity to take place around or on top of it while not infringing on the suggested private space of the person sitting, while the narrowness creates a feeling of safety and intimacy when a person tucks themselves into the tables end. working members of Nunavummiut society, it can be very difficult for them to find the resources necessary to maintain their equipment and to continue living a traditional lifestyle. Seals, caribou, and fish cannot be turned into snow machine parts, a new engine, or a repaired boat. In order to continue hunting, harvesters have to find a second job or an outside source of income. In Greenland many communities have country food markets where harvesters can sell surplus country food to pay the cash costs of their harvesting activities. With the support of The Department of Economic Development and Transportation and the Fisheries and Sealing Division of the Department of Environment we organized a pilot project to try a Greenland style market in Iqaluit. We worked with local hunters to identify sources of sustainably harvested country food within Iqaluit and from other Nunavut communities that they sold at the market. The market was a success with over 200 Nunavummiut in attendance and provides the proof of concept necessary to justify holding regular market days in Iqaluit, and to consider holding pilot projects in other communities. Our hardworking hunters sold nipku, clams, muktuk, seal, berries, caribou stew and bannock, and everything sold out very quickly. We are confident that regular consumption of country food will positively contribute towards the integrity of northern culture, and will help many households cope with the stresses affecting northern society. After a successful pilot we continue to organize the market on a monthly basis and enjoy seeing it grow.
